I was given this small, cheap, pot plant last year. It had slim green leaves, produced small white flowers in the summer and grew to about 10” high (very little spread). The leaves died back slowly, but the plant didn’t die. This year it has grown like a triffid. It hasn’t produced any flowers (?yet), but is just under a metre high. It’s lower leaves are going yellow, before going brown and dying off. It is ‘drinking’ water copiously. I don’t know if I should repot it, or put it into the ground, but I don’t want it to take over our small garden. What is it?

It looks to me like Phlox, but there are several different varieties. I have lots of white ones in my garden they can grow quite tall and multiply every year, but I have trouble with the purple and pink ones, I have to keep them on the patio as it's more sheltered.

Hope that helps.

It does look like Phlox.
In my experience they get slowly bigger as a clump and don't really take over a garden - but are better in the ground than a pot.
