Pruning Coprosma

Reply from Kathy C

Hi, Karen,
Since this is an evergreen that flowers in spring, the best time to prune is after it finished flowering. This way it will put on new growth throughout summer and will flower on that growth next spring. Even though this plant is best treated as a foliage shrub (though that really is a matter of opinion), there will be significantly less flowers in spring, which means less or no berries come summer. As a general rule, Coprosma respond well to a severe pruning, so if you can wait until after flowering, I would tackle it then.
