Tiny pale black caterpillars eating all the leaves. How do I deal with this. Don't want to harm tadpoles in the pond!

From your description, it sounds as if it the iris sawfly that is your culprit. The plant most affected are waterside irises only and their season of destruction is right now - early to mid summer.

I think that your best method of control is by picking them off by hand and squishing them.

Remember, for every one you dispose of in this way, you are breaking the life cycles of hundreds more attacking the plant!
