When is the best time to prune this bush? Mine is being squashed a bit by other shrubs and it needs a bit of cutting back. Someone once told me that you should never prune a tree peony. Is hat right?

Hi Jane,

Tree peonies should be pruned in February if required (which it sounds as though yours does, as they like good air circulation). Take back to a new bud, and it should respond well.

To thin out older tree peonies, take one main stem a year down to a new bud about 30cm above ground level. This should improve the form and also give a renewed vigour to the tree.

Good luck! Hope this helps.
