Do I need to protect 'shin deshojo' in the winter? It's a new plant I bought (very small and not in good condition) - I put it in a pot with John Innes No.3 soil and 2 Osmocote tablets last week. It has a couple of small branches with some leaves on still. Any help would be much appreciated.
Make sure you keep it in a warm, sheltered site this winter and protect it from particulary frosty conditions. Make sure it does not get too dry over winter and also make sure the pot doesn't freeze. Come spring, particularly when it is leafing out, keep it out of morning sun - this will cause leaf scorch. Also, frost when the leaves are emerging will damage new leaves so if you know frost is coming in spring, get it protected (warm, sheltered spot). Technically, you could wrap it in hort fleece this winter but as long as it is sheltered (best against a warm house wall), I don't think it is absolutley necessary.
Thankyou so much Kathy C for your help re. my Acer. Going to wrap it in fleece as you suggested - I don't have a wall near my garden as I live in an upstairs apartment and my garden is right at the back of me and my neighbours outdoor space. Thanks again for your helpful reply. Gillian
Thanks Kathy C for your good advice - think I'll wrap it in fleece this winter and perhaps cover the pot with bubble-wrap as the plant is not looking very well at the moment. Your advice is much appreciated.
