Hi, Sheila,
Look for ericaceous (acid-loving) compost on the label.

Sheila,

I successfully grew several types of heather in a very windy balcony pot when I lived by the Thames. The trick is to plant a variety as some heathers will flower winter-spring and some later. Also some prefer a well drained planting and other dont mind, so if you buy a variety, you will bound to find one that will thrive.
