The old varieties of Philadelphus are always best prunned fairly hard after flowering and to keep new shoots coming up it is also useful to remove some stems from ground level. The newer varieties tend to keep their flowers longer and are more compact and bushy and should be trimmed as soon as the flowers are finished cutting back to the new shoots which will already be appearing, This should be done every year.

Rhododendrons like an open soil mixture - give your plant a good mulch, leafmould is best, and feed to help it fight off the infection which is either rust or a fungus.

The lavatera or tree mallow is only semi evergreen. It is also best to prune it back this time of year, ideally a little earlier, to rejuvenate and to keep it bushy. I find with these they only last as good specimens for 2-3 years and then are best replaced. They are also more susceptible as they get older to disease like rust.
They are very easy to propagate from cuttings just pop some non flowering shoots in some sandy soil.
