Re: Drought tolerant species for Turkish garden

from Paul Kemp

Hi Simon,

I used to live in inland Catalonia and have some experience with plants that need to be tolerant both of drought and some cold. I recommend that you read "Pour un jardin sans arrosage" by Olivier Filippi (this is also available in English but I'm not sure of the title) and "Steppes" by Michael Bone and Dan Johnson. "The Dry Garden" by Beth Chatto is also recommended. Depending on where in Turkey you are, there should also be plenty of beautiful native plants, for example Phlomis, irises, sages and poppies, that you could use. Please just let me know if you'd like some more specific recommendations or information.

Best wishes,

Paul

Re: Re: is Verbena hastata 'Rosea' a late emerger?

from Paul Kemp

Hi Kathy,

thanks for your reply. I mulched it with straw (as I did for the Agastache and a number of other plants) and I removed the straw at the end of February. My soil is quite sandy so waterlogging is not a problem I have. In any case, when I was out in the garden today I had a good look at my Verbena and there appear to be some shoots now so it was just very late.

Thanks again,

Paul

is Verbena hastata 'Rosea' a late emerger?

from Paul Kemp

Hi everyone,

I planted a number of new perennials last autumn, one of which is Verbena hastata 'Rosea'. Unlike all the other perennials, it still shows no sign of life after the winter. I would be surprised if the frost had killed it off as it is interspersed with Agastache 'Black Adder' which is apparently less hardy and that is doing fine. Has anyone experienced anything similar with this plant?

Thanks,

Paul

it looks like a species of Solanum to me.
