Many small leaved hebes will be ok if you chop them back hard in early spring. New shots will appear from close to the base. There is a danger of the plant dying of shock, although that's never happened to mine.

I'm sorry but I don't think it is akebia quinata.the leaves don't look right. But I don't know what it is!

Josh, that's fantastic. Congratulations on your great degree and on choosing such a rewarding career. I came to my career in horticulture late, at the age of 40, and wish I'd done so earlier. But now, ten years on, I love every day and hope the same is true for you.

Yes too reckon that's akebia. Especially if the leaves seem quite thin and are spaced quire far apart on slender but surprisingly tough stems.
