Diane Blood, Echoes of the Seaside - Haddington (EH41)

Styles: Coastal, Suburban

Soil types: Clay

Soil drainage: Moisture-retentive

Soil pH: Neutral

Light: Partial Shade

Aspect: North

Exposure: Sheltered

This sunny garden, seen every day from the generous kitchen windows, provides a pleasant space which is easy-to-use and maintain for the owner’s retirement in East Lothian. The design takes the sunny aspect, the northern light, the colours of the modern kitchen and the proximity to East Lothian’s beaches as inspiration. A dining patio is placed to one side so that furniture does not come to dominate the garden and will take advantage of the afternoon and evening sun. A smaller seating area is placed for morning coffee and a different view of the garden. The grey tones from the kitchen are continued in paving and pebbles as a visual link from inside to out, with the magenta kitchen splash back echoed in accents of bright pink in the planting. Level changes to manage the slope are made in timber sleepers painted dark grey to complement the paving, giving a clean, contemporary look
