A large garden on the slope of the Hog's Back, Surrey. The front of the property faces south, the back is north facing and we are on solid chalk so soil needs huge amounts of mulching, manuring and composting. We have tall (60ft) trees which cast shade and create a "woodland" area. We have fruit trees (quince, pear, apple, plum) and three raised veg. beds. The greenhouse grows tomatoes in summer and stores tender plants in winter. The greenhouse heater comes on when the temperature falls to 5C. Because of the north facing aspect of our garden we have a big problem with moss. I have decided that we have to learn to live with it as it is so hard to eradicate. We actively encourage wild flowers to colonise the 'lawn', so wild violet, cowslips, primroses, creeping speedwell and daisies live with us!
