Chris Vaughan, My Garden (CV7)

Styles: Courtyards and small terraces, Rural

Soil types: Clay

Soil drainage: Moist but well-drained

Soil pH: Acid, Neutral

Light: Full Shade, Full Sun, Partial Shade

Aspect: South

Mine is a triangular garden in a frost pocket. Generally 2 weeks behind the local area in Spring. The soil was originally clay but hard work has resulted in a good loam over most of the area. Small Front garden has raised beds and slate chippings and the rear garden is set out as a courtyard with polished limestone and slate, raised sleeper beds and a single pergola. The larger side garden is sheltered by a mature horse chestnut and has a circular lawn and a shady seatinf area. The site is sloping and drains under the lawn prevent waterlogging in the heavy soil and drain into a bog garden in the lower corner. Most of the fall on the slope is acommodated by terracing supported by yet more sleepers. Steps are shaded by a pergola. A small area is dedicated to vegetables and fruit trees. The garden has only been created in the last year so planting is in its early stages.
