Overlooking a steep, wooded valley in the shelter of an historic Cathar citadel in South-West France, the garden has stunning views of the Pyrenees in the distance and a ruined castle nearby. Plants are chosen for their ecological suitability - the garden is baked in the hot summers, can be hit by severe frosts in winter, and may be buffeted by gales at any time. On one side is the bedrock that supports the house. On the other, 800 year-old dry-stone retaining walls keep the garden from tumbling into the valley. The garden has a natural spring, which flows out through an old stone cistern into a small pond. Natural flowing forms and local materials contribute to the sense of place, while shade trees provide places to rest and enjoy the view.
