Ana Sanchez-Martin, Chill-out sunken garden in Crouch End (N8)

Styles: Contemporary, Courtyards and small terraces, Oriental

The owner of this garden is a busy young London banker who wanted a really stylish outdoor space suitable for entertaining friends. As she travels extensively and stays in some of the world's most exclusive hotels, she wanted her garden to have a sophisticated and exotic look. As it was, the garden was an eyesore and she never used it. The starting point for the design was to solve the substantial change in height levels between the inside of the property and the garden. Instead of constructing steps down into the garden, we decided to build a hardwood timber deck flush with interior level and use the resulting 'vacuum' as an opportunity to create a sunken seating area with built in seats and plinths for lanterns. Space for a firepit in the middle and seat pads and cushions helped turn this space into a comfortable Ibiza-style chill-out zone.

About me
I trained as a horticulturalist and designer at Capel Manor and the English Gardening School, after 15 years in the film business; a career which encompassed anything from directing music videos to producing TV programmes for Channel 4. The skills needed for both fields are surprisingly similar: the ability to visualize space, create strong pictorial compositions and, last but not least, the ability to tell a story through the garden. My first commission was for homeless charity Crisis to create their first Show Garden for the Hampton Court Flower Show, which was featured on BBC and The Times, as well as being selected for Prince Edward’s visit. Until setting up Germinate, I worked for design and build firm Modular Garden.
