Ana Sanchez-Martin, Stylish and fun-filled Family garden in Highgate (N19)

Styles: Child friendly, Contemporary, School garden, Suburban, Wildflower, Wildlife

This Highgate family wanted a garden which had enough interest for the kids and attracted them to play outside, but they wanted to avoid the 'playground' look. They wanted the garden to look stylish and grown up too. Creating a garden for children is not just a case of putting a few climbing frames and slides in the garden but about creating various areas of interest where the children could engage their developing motor skills as well as their imaginations. About me
I trained as a horticulturalist and designer at Capel Manor and the English Gardening School, after 15 years in the film business; a career which encompassed anything from directing music videos to producing TV programmes for Channel 4. The skills needed for both fields are surprisingly similar: the ability to visualize space, create strong pictorial compositions and, last but not least, the ability to tell a story through the garden. My first commission was for homeless charity Crisis to create their first Show Garden for the Hampton Court Flower Show, which was featured on BBC and The Times, as well as being selected for Prince Edward’s visit. Until setting up Germinate, I worked for design and build firm Modular Garden.
