My back garden is small and north facing and is on a slope. There is a small lawn and patio with a plot about 5m by 4m which I need to find suitable plants for. The soil is clay and is very wet throughout the winter. The garden gets sun in the afternoon and is in partial shade in the mnornings. The plot I want to plant and to improve is on a slight slope. Plants requiring full sun do not do well.Plants that do thrive, are things like hostas, skimmia, snowdrops and hardy cyclamen, but what I really want are some colourful small shrubs (flowers or leaves) to give the plot some architectural interest and then build in layers and ground cover plants around them.I prefer perennial plants.

About me
I have recently moved to a smaller house with far less garden than I have been used to.The front garden is a curved border which is south facing and enjoys full sun for most of the day. My husband and collects phlox paniculata and we have about 14 different colours in the front border. They did exeptionally well in the summer of 2013. We underplanted them with petunias and had a lovely bright colourful display. The soil dries out very quickly,so daily watering during most of the summer was a must.(see photo below)

Biggest gardening accomplishments

Biggest gardening frustrations
My present back garden with its tiny plot and wet clay soil facing north, with limited sun in the summer. Trying to find some plants with colour and interest that will be happy growing there. I am aware that I must do something to the soil to aid drainage etc.

The gardening project I am currently working on
My small north facing back garden plot. It is also sloping and has steps going down to three different levels. The plot I am working on is approximately 5m by 4m and is adjacent to a set of steps with a small lawn to the right of it. I need to improve the
