Rae Wilkinson, Surrey Hills garden (RH4)

Styles: Child friendly, Contemporary, Courtyards and small terraces, Formal, Organic, Rural, Wildflower, Wildlife

Soil types: Sandy

Soil drainage: Moist but well-drained

Soil pH: Acid

Light: Partial Shade

Aspect: East

Exposure: Sheltered

Hardiness: Hardy (H4)

We had a blank canvas of a sloping lawn, with a brief to make more useable, formal spaces with a classic contemporary feel. I created three levels using walling and steps, which provided space for a large lawn area, a vegetable parterre, a long formal pond flanked by pleached hornbeam and a fire pit area. Planting is structural and decorative, with plenty of seasonal interest and a cut flower garden within the formal parterre.

About me
Having worked as a gardener and garden designer for the past 20 years, working with both designers and landscapers, I have learnt a lot about plants and materials and their effective use in creating stunning outdoor spaces. My background is in art and sculpture and this is the root of my creativity and sense of style. I believe in making outdoor living spaces beautiful and usable, whilst sensitively connecting them to their setting. I bring deep knowledge of horticulture and in particular, how plants work together, to enhance and connect landscape and architecture

Gardening expertise

Biggest gardening accomplishments
Recently designed the 'Space Within' garden, a Mindfulness Garden for the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show 2019, which received RHS Gold Medal, Best in Category and People's Choice Awards.

Biggest gardening frustrations
The currently unpredictable nature of our climate!

A town garden, a large country garden and a care home garden, among other projects.
