My courtyard garden is in the centre of a large town and faces west. When I moved here in 2009 the garden was paved and had raised beds, but didn't contain a single plant. My aim was to create a lush garden room that would be a peaceful haven for me to relax in. A narrow passageway at the side of the house leads to a square area, 15' x 15', with a mixture of exotic/tropical, mediterranean and traditional plants. The passageway contains mostly woodland and shade loving plants. Many plants are in pots, so I'm able to change the garden by moving things around. The garden is fairly well-protected and, as it has become more established, has created its own micro-climate. Bananas and cannas have survived well but I also look for plants that are hardy but exotic looking.

The gardening project I am currently working on
This year's project was to create a small wildlife pond and bog garden by removing a few paving stones. After letting the water settle for 3 weeks, I have just planted it up and added a few little goldfish. Two enormous frogs have also moved in.
