Soil drainage: Moisture-retentive

Soil pH: Neutral

Light: Full Sun

Aspect: South, East, West

Hardiness: Hardy (H4)

Large front garden on a modern estate. The clients had already cleared the existing boggy lawn and over-mature conifer hedging and had commissioned a low wall to be built around the whole garden. Then they got stuck and called me in to help with ideas and plant recommendations. During the first meeting I showed the clients photographs of possible garden styles and it soon became clear that the garden needed to recreate the feeling of being surrounded by flowers and foliage that reflected one of the client's memories of being in the garden with her grandfather as a little girl. So, the garden was designed on the basis of atmosphere rather than looks. Three years on, the garden is an oasis of naturalistic planting, fully enclosed within a boundary of shrubs and tall perennials in the summer months and with plenty of winter interest from the grasses, bamboos and coloured stems.

About me
I am a professional garden designer/business owner at Shades of Green Garden Design based in Dollar, Clackmannanshire. I help clients to create the ideal garden for their lifestyle, location & budget. I often work alongside my clients in the new garden during the planting phase, chatting with them about why the plants have been selected and what needs to be done to encourage healthy, vigorous growth over the ensuing seasons. Every garden that I design is different, as each one reflects the aspirations, preferences and needs of the client. As result, my working life is one of constant stimulation and challenge, as I seek the best solutions to the problems posed by each garden I am involved with. It's a very satisfying way to spend one's days! Some of my clients' gardens are listed in the Members Gardens section - search for Belinda Macdonald.

Gardening expertise

Biggest gardening accomplishments
Every garden I have been involved with, whether my own or my clients, is a major accomplishment to me. That is the joy of garden-making.

Biggest gardening frustrations
Not having enough time to spend in my own garden!

The gardening project I am currently working on
I always have a range of design projects on the go at any one time, usually a mix of large rural gardens and smaller suburban plots. When time allows, I may take on smaller projects on a consultancy basis.
