E. americana - E. americana is a tender, spreading, deciduous shrub or small tree with twisted, spiny branches bearing semi-glossy leaves divided into three ovate, mid-green leaflets turning yellow in autumn and dense clusters of sickle-shaped, bright red flowers in spring. Flowers are followed by long, bumpy seed pods ripening dark brown.
