Diospyros is a tender, multi-trunked or single stemmed tree with long, drooping, ovate leaves which are yellow when young, turning green. Inconspicuous flowers are produced in late spring surrounded by a green calyx tube (female flowers are single and cream-colored while the pink-tinged male flowers are typically borne in threes) followed by edible light-yellow to dark orange-red fruit in autumn.
