I. australe is a tender, free-flowering, erect to spreading, semi-evergreen shrub with downy stems, silvery-grey, corky bark and hairy, lance-shaped, dark green leaves. Funnel- to bell-shaped, blue, lavender, or white flowers in early summer are followed by spherical berries that turn yellow-green when ripe.
