S. amarissima is a tender, upright, branching, aromatic, deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub with ovate to heart-shaped, veined, dark green leaves and, from late summer into autumn, racemes of whorled, two-lipped, blue to violet flowers with hairy calyces and white-marked throats.
