V. ovatum is an upright, bushy, evergreen shrub with arching branches bearing densely arranged, ovate, toothed, leathery, glossy, dark green leaves, bronze when young. Dense, pendent racemes of urn-shaped or cylindrical, pink-flushed, white flowers in late spring and early summer followed by edible, spherical, glossy, black fruit.
