D. cantabrica is a variable, compact, upright or prostrate, evergreen shrub with oval to lance-shaped, dark green leaves, silver-hairy beneath, and, from early summer into autumn, erect racemes of upright or pendent, urn-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink, or red.
