'Hessei' is a compact, upright to rounded, deciduous shrub with ovate or obovate, toothed, veined, glossy, dark green leaves turning red to reddish-brown in autumn, and, in late spring, small, flat-topped cymes of tiny, tubular, white flowers followed by bright red fruit that persist into winter.
