M. ringens is an erect, hairless, deciduous perennial with square, branching stems bearing narrowly oblong to lance-shaped, toothed, mid-green leaves and, in summer, tubular, two-lipped, violet, violet-blue, white, or rarely, pink flowers with narrow throats.
