Q. pubescens is a spreading, deciduous tree with deeply grooved, grey to black bark and densely hairy shoots bearing oblong to ovate, grey-green leaves, hairy beneath, with rounded lobes ending in pointed teeth. Clusters or catkins of insignificant flowers in spring are followed by ovoid acorns with scaly cups.
